5Ks, Father’s Day, and Daddy’s Little Girl

The four of us Alleys ran a 5K yesterday. I’m proud of all of us for running, especially since we aren’t really what you would call a running family. I run because it’s cheap and convenient exercise. Bill runs because he has to for the Army. We rarely run together. And never with the kids. In addition to just being proud that we all crossed the finish line, I’m very proud of the kids. Finding My Limits with Tomatoes

How much am I willing to spend to get a fresh, homegrown tomato? Today, I learned my limits. I’ve been using the same metal tomato cages for at least 6 years, but maybe 7 or 8, I can’t remember. Counting today, there are 8 1/2 more days of school left. My kids are bursting with excitement. I am in a slight panic. There are 8 1/2 more days of long stretches of peace and quiet to work and run errands and think and plan my business strategy. In 9 days, I will be in the throes of the “summer schedule,” which consists of trying to work...

A Trip to Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden

Posted by on May 20, 2014 in Gardening, Grandma | 0 comments

Garden clubs were something I always associated with my grandmother. So maybe it’s only fitting that one of the first things I did as a new member of the Yadkin Valley Garden Club was to take a field trip to Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden, a place Grandma and I visited together 15 years ago. They held a media day, and as an eager young editorial assistant at Carolina Gardener, I jumped at the chance to go tour and take advantage of my press...
